格式塔视觉原理并不是什么新鲜玩意儿不是一座塔也不是人名不要以为格式塔是一座建筑物，也不要认为它是什么国外著名人物的名字；格式塔是德文Gestalt的译音，意思就是“模式、形状、形式”。格式塔是一个著名的心理学派，基于这个学派的格式塔视觉原理还有一个小名：完形心理学。最简单的格式塔：在上图中并不存在三角形，然而由于视觉系统不断的进行完形计算，让人们的视觉认为“存在一个完整的三角形”冠冕堂皇的解释：-……不是用主观方法把原本存在的碎片结合起来的内容的总和，或主观随意决定的结构。它们不单纯是盲目地相加起来的、基本上是散乱的难于处理的元素般的“形质”，也不仅仅是附加于已经存在的资料之上的形式的东西。相反，这里要研究的是整体，是具有特殊的内在规律的完整的历程，所考虑的是有具体的整体原则的结构……总结成三句话： 人们总是先看到整体，然后再去关注局部； 人们对事物的整体感受不等于局部感受的加法； 视觉系统总是在不断的试图在感官上将图形闭合；

知觉的对象有不同的属性，由不同的部分组成，但我们并不把它感知为个别孤立的部分，而总是把它知觉为一个有组织的整体。甚至当某些部分被遮盖或抹去时，我们也能够将零散的部分组织成完整的对象。知觉的这种特性称为知觉的整体性或知觉的组织性。格式塔心理学家曾对知觉的整体性进行过许多研究，提出知觉是按照一定的规律形成和组织起来的，在知觉任何给定的刺激模式时，我们易于以稳定且连贯的形式把不同的元素简单加以组织，而不是把这些元素当成不可理解的、孤立的一堆混乱感觉。格式塔心理学家和后来的研究者提出的知觉组织的主要原则如下。
（1）邻近原则（law of proximity）。在空间上彼此接近的刺激物更容易被知觉为一个整体（见图7�6a）。因此，同样的六个●排成不同的空间模式，●● ●● ●●更倾向于被组织为三组，而●●● ●●●倾向于被知觉为两组。

（2）相似性原则（law of similarity）。在大小、形状、颜色或形式上相似的刺激物更容易被知觉为一个整体。同色的或同样形状的区域看起来更像一个整体（见图7－6b）。在这些不同属性中，颜色的作用又更加重要。
（3）连续性原则（law of continuity）。知觉的另一个原则是简单和连续性。我们一般会把图7－6c中的图形看成是一个圆圈和一个矩形重叠在一起，而不是看成更复杂的两个图形的拼接。知觉倾向于将刺激组织成我们最熟悉的某种模式。
（4）闭合原则（law of closure）。乍一看上去，我们会将图7－6d左边的图形看成是一组圆圈，尽管每个圆圈上都有缺口。这是因为知觉有将缺口加以“弥补”而成为一个连续的完整形状的倾向。
（5）好图形原则（law of good form）。单纯的、规则的、左右对称的图形容易被知觉为一个整体。图7－6e中，黑色区域更容易被看成一个整体，因为其对称性相比白色区域更好。同样，图7－6d中，完整的圆圈形状是大脑所熟悉的简单模式，也是符合好图形原则的图形。相比而言，圆圈比图7－6d最右边另外两个形状更易成为知觉的元素。
（6）同域原则（law of common region）。知觉的组织过程远不是上述规则的简单相加。在图7－6f中，如果根据经典的相似性原则和邻近原则，星形和圆形应各被视为一组，但是，背景着色后划分出三个区域，看起来更像是三组物体，中间一组由两个星和两个圆点组成。根据同域原则，处于同一地带或同一区域的刺激物更容易被视为一个整体，这是心理学家新近提出的一种知觉组织原则（Palmer，1992）。
早期的格式塔心理学家强调，知觉的组织性是刺激本身的自然特点，是人的先天的完形倾向，与过去经验无关。的确，在双关图知觉中，我们大多能够很随意地以不同的方式形成我们的知觉形象组织。但是，大量的研究（包括一些跨文化研究）表明，知觉的组织性与人的知觉经验有直接的联系。知觉系统可以通过训练而日趋精细，从而完成通常情况下非常困难的物体识别和知觉组织任务（Biederman & Shiffrar，1987；Olson & Chun，2002）。
